2014 Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) is now accepting registrations

The Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Culture Office (TECO) in Houston will administer the 2014 Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Culture Center of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston (10303 Westoffice Drive, Houston / phone: 713.789.4995).

TOCFL, originally known as TOP (Test of Proficiency-Huayu), is intended for those that wish to measure their Chinese proficiency, and is available in both traditional and simplified character versions.  In 2014, the level of the TOCFL has been reformed in order to correspond to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment). The new version of the TOCFL has three proficiency bands: Band A, Band B, and Band C. Each of the bands has two levels. Examinees are not required to write Chinese characters while taking the test, all answers are to be marked on the Answer Sheet with a 2B pencil. Examinees who pass the test will receive a Chinese Proficiency Certificate as a credential for the followings:
1. Becoming eligible for the “Taiwan Scholarship” and “Ministry of Education Huayu Enrichment Scholarship” sponsored by government for studying in Taiwan.
2.   Qualifying for admission to the academic programs at colleges or universities in Taiwan.
3.  Serving as a job-required proof of Chinese language proficiency for individuals who wish to obtain Chinese-inclusive, bilingual employment globally .
4.   Providing an incentive to those who are interested in learning Chinese

Registration is accepted from January 24 to February 23, 2014. The registration form can be submitted by mail or on site at the following address:

Required documents and fee are as follows.
2. Photo ID: valid passport, driver’s license, student ID or birth certificate
3. $30 of registration fee: cash or check payable to Education Division, TECO in Houston

2014世界事務協會外語奬餐會-學華語到臺灣

為推廣華語教育,增進與美國主流教育機構交流,駐休士頓臺北經濟文化辦事處教育組周慧宜組長應休士頓世界事務協會(World Affairs Council of Houston)邀請出席本(103)25日所舉辦的外語獎餐會(Foreign Language Awards Luncheons)華語日活動。周組長代表中華民國教育部致詞,並進行簡報推廣臺灣教育成就及世界排名與美國排名相近,實極具世界競爭力,同時鼓勵美國高中生多學習外語,也肯定出席餐會的學生,選擇中文為其第二外語,並主動接觸國際事務,是具備全球視野的領袖人才。當日致詞來賓包含於19日訪臺進行教育訪問及獲馬英九總統接見的聖湯瑪仕大學國際研究中心主任史漢傑博士(Dr. Hans Stockton),其強調學習華語對美國學生的重要性,並且分享其在臺留學經驗,令他受惠良多,此外,他也鼓勵在場來自各高中的學生赴臺學習華語,以增加個人未來競爭優勢。

當日有來自休士頓地區10所高中研習華語的學生計150餘人參加,學生透過表演,展示豐碩的華語學習成果,節目內容活潑精彩,現場與會人員笑聲不斷,例如:以迪士尼動畫花木蘭為發想的功夫表演、講述個人華語學習心得的詩詞朗誦、宣導行車安全以及改編經典名劇羅密歐與茱莉的短劇、不惜扮醜演出貓狗動物介紹家庭成員演出、還有婉約優雅的中國舞蹈與大家耳熟能詳的中文流行歌曲演唱等等,讓在場來賓感受到美國學生對華語的熱誠以及不同於英語與美國文化的華語學習體驗。
