Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL)
  • Target Test Taker: Non-native Chinese speakers
  • Purpose:The Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (“TOCFL”) was developed by the Steering Committee for the Test of Proficiency-Huayu (SC-TOP). Since the TOCFL was launched in December 2003 in Taiwan, it has been administered in the U.S. A., Canada, U.K., France, Japan, Korea, Russia, Australia, etc. To meet the demand of numerous international Chinese learners, the SC-TOP provides overseas test services in more than 30 countries. Those who wish to know their level of Chinese proficiency, or those who want to study, work or do business in Chinese speaking countries are encouraged to take the TOCFL for national/governmental verification.
  • Level and Format of Test:The TOCFL has been standardized and developed under the strict scrutiny of researchers and scholars in the fields of linguistics, language teaching and testing.The authentic materials used in the TOCFL are extracted from materials in daily life, such as advertisements, public announcements, notices, letters, time schedules, and weather broadcasts. These diverse texts are derived from different fields, including literature, science, art, astronomy and history.
  1. Level 1: Candidates who have taken 180-480 hours of Chinese courses in non-Chinese speaking countries or have acquired a vocabulary base of 500 words.  40 questions / 50 minutes
  2. Level 2: Candidates who have taken 480-720 hours of Chinese courses in non-Chinese speaking countries or have acquired a vocabulary base of 800 words.  80 questions / 80 minutes 
  3. Level 3 : Candidates who have taken 720-960 hours of Chinese courses in non-Chinese speaking countries or have acquired a vocabulary base of 1,500 words.  100 questions / 110 minutes 
  4. Level 4:  Candidates who have taken 960-1,920 hours of Chinese courses in non-Chinese speaking countries or have acquired a vocabulary base of 5,000 words.  100 questions / 110 minutes 
  5. Level 5: Candidates who have taken 1,920 hours of Chinese courses in non-Chinese speaking countries or have acquired a vocabulary base of 8,000 words. 100 question / 110 minutes
